Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP) granules.

How To: Cook with TVP

Though far less known than tofu, tempeh, and seitan, TVP is quite a clever little ingredient used in vegan cooking. But, what is TVP, how do you cook with it, and what are some delicious vegan recipes utilizing TVP?

I personally love to cook with this underutilized ingredient! TVP is easy to work with and is a great plant based meat alternative. 🌱

What is TVP

TVP stands for Textured Vegetable Protein. (It may also be referred to as Textured Soy Protein). TVP is made by extracting the oil from soy flour. Then, it is cooked, extruded, and dehydrated.

TVP is extruded into slices, strips, chunks, and most commonly, granules.

TVP is shelf-stable and has a long shelf life. It is versatile, and the granules make a great plant based alternative to ground meats. And, TVP itself is flavorless, so it absorbs flavorings extremely well.

Find TVP in health food stores. Additionally, you can purchase online.

Always try to purchase organic or non-GMO certified TVP. Soybeans are one of the most genetically modified crops, so purchasing organic ensures no GMOs.

TVP is high in protein and low in fat. It is also a good source of fiber, iron, and potassium. And, TVP is naturally gluten free and cholesterol free.

How to Cook TVP into “meat”

Unlike some other vegan protein alternatives (such as seitan), TVP is not intimidating and is extremely simple to work with.

Rehydrate TVP before use: in water, vegetable broth, or other marinades. (Most recipes utilizing TVP will include this step in the cooking instructions.)

Once rehydrated, TVP has a fibrous, spongy texture. Use TVP to make vegan versions of burgers, tacos, sloppy joes, chili, spaghetti, and so much more.

TVP can even be made into the most delicious vegan bacon bits. Seriously, they are one of my favorite toppings on, literally, anything!
